Emilia-Romagna

For some who rush through Italy getting between Venice and Florence, Emilia-Romagna is seen from the window of a train, or as country-side along the Autostrada. But this is a very interesting Region, with cities that include Modena, Parma and Bologna. Make the time to visit this area.

On our 2007 trip to Bologna  we stayed at the very pleasant Hotel Porta San Mamolo.. We connected up with Roberto Condello, the owner and found the hotel, its staff and ambience to be excellent. The rooms are very nicely decorated and there is an attractive courtyard with citrus trees, fragrant herbs and wonderful flower-clad balconies off some of the rooms.

There are outdoor sofas and in the evening the courtyard  takes on a warm glow of candle lit lanterns.

The lobby has an air of relaxed elegance which we found to be more reminiscent of a small Paris hotel than an Italian hotel.    A charming wall to wall glassed-in breakfast room in the centre of the courtyard served one of the best breakfasts we have had in Italy. A spread of fresh fruit salad, cakes, buns, croissants, ham & cheese an even bacon and eggs.

We had a superior double room (Room 204). It was very large with a large chair that could be used as a single bed if travelling with three.  It was warm and inviting with quality furnishings and a very nice and good sized bathroom.

Off the room was lovely balcony with a large wrought iron table with wicker chairs overlooking the courtyard

I saw a couple of the standard rooms.  They are considerably smaller than the superior rooms, although nicely decorated.  If the budget allows,  I would book into one of the superior rooms. Either way we don't think you would be disappointed.

We do not include many hotels in our "wow factor" category.  The Hotel Porta San Mamolo certainly fits this category.  We enjoyed it so much that we would make Bologna, which is very beautiful, a destination, particularly for the hotel.  Roberto Condello says we give our best for our guest but we still believe that "too much is not enough".  Their mission statement proved to be true during our stay.
