Owning a Pen vs Using a Pen

I use my pens daily. In the course a day it I often have conversations about "my pen". Many of the pens are real show-stoppers and with any break in a meeting, it is easy for a conversation to take place about my fountain pen.

As the conversations continue, I think that one of the distinctions is using a good fountain pen is the feeling of "owning a pen" rather than the action of using a pen. There is a difference. I must agree, some of the basic office-supply pens are great writers. Yes you can get a great pen for a couple of bucks.

But when you get a good pen, not only do you get a writing instrument that has a good writing experience, but you also get the feeling of ownership. In this day of the disposable items, that is a difference.

The feeling of ownership is something that pen companies should look at as they develop the quality of their pens and back the service they provide. No one really wants to own a lemon.

Omas Society Accessories

Assorted Pens

Omas accessories included a company and product brochure, a membership card, pen cleaning cloth and small notepad.

This week my Omas Society members package arrived, and it struck me that here is a pen company, that really knows the difference with ownership of a good pen. I had registered the purchase of my Omas Celluloid Paragon and became an Omas Society Member.

When you buy an Omas pen, you have the option of registering it online at the Omas Society (www.omas.com) - Select the Omas Society icon/link.

The registration process takes you through the process of identifying the line, material, location, store and date of purchase. Once entered, your Omas pens are recorded in a database, which you can view your registrations on-line.

On the Omas Society website are links to an exclusive Newsletter, a test that asks questions about your likes and dislikes in terms of style with a suggested Omas pen for you and even images files that can be downloaded for your PC desktop. There is a special fountain pen, reserved for Omas Society Members that can be purchased as well as a two-pen box to hold part of your collection.

Bravo Omas! Here is a company that as dedicated some resources to support the ownership experience. It only reinforced in my mind the difference between owning a good pen and using a good pen.
