Amalfi Coast

Welcome to the Travel Journal. Additional information is aslo in Great Places to Stay

Amalfi Coast (Compania)

The Amalfi Coast lies just south of Naples and this is the part of the coast that runs between Sorrento to Salerno.

Here you will find about 100 kilometers of what can only be described as "eye-popping scenery".

Mountains drop into the sea. Narrow roads curve and twist beyond believe. And yes, tour buses, cars, scooters and the like all attempt to travel the roads.

When driving along the coast, tTurn off the air conditioner and open the window and emjoy!. Listen for the beeping of the horns... someone is coming around the bend.

The Amalfi Coast

Amalfi CoastOn our first trip we made a wide circle to avoid driving anywhere near Naples and approached the Amalfi Coast from the town of Salerno on the southern end. The traffic in Salerno can be hectic and be careful to watch for the brown sign that points to the la Costa Amalfitana or you will have to do some back tracking. As you leave Salerno you have to make a fast left-hand turn to catch the exit.

Once on the coastal highway if you through that was tricky the best is yet to come. The coastal road is a narrow winding road. On the curves while two cars can pass each other, a car and a bus can not. Listen from the honking of the horns. Be prepared to stop and do some backing up. Pull those side mirrors in and somehow you make it.

We have stayed just outside of Amalfi at the Villa San Michele - one of our Great Places to Stay - a few times and always count such an opportunity as a bonus. Located just a couple of kilometers from Amalfi you will not have thought you have only drove 22 kilometers from Salerno. When the colour returns to the knuckles of your hands you can enjoy a drink and enjoy being on the Coast. It is doubtful you will need your car again so park it and walk, bus or boat to the locations you want to visit.
