Pompeii

Pompeii, first occupied in the 8th Century BC, was taken over by the Etruscans throughout the 5th and 6th centuries BC and then the Saminites who turned Pompeii into a pure Greek town.  The Romans endedtheir reign when they took control of Pompeii around 200 BC.

It was a Roman town until in 79 AD when Mt Vesuvius errupted. 20,000 Pompeian residents were buried in the ash. Under the ash everything remained as it was at the time of the eruption.  Artwork and buildings, all were preserved.

The day trip to Pompeii is easy. Just walk down to Amalfi (20 minutes), catch a bus to Salerno and there are buses from their to Pompeii.
