The Piazza Navona, or "Circo Agonale", occupies the spot where once stood the Stadium of Domitian, which held up to 30.000 spectators. The church of Sant'Agnese in Agone a magnificent Baroque building designed by G. Rainaldi and Borromini. |
It was Borromini's arch-rival, Bernini, who received the commission for the piazza's famous fountains. There are three magnificient fountains.

In the centre is the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini. The four colossal ifgures represent the Ganges, Danube, Rio de la Plata and Nile rivers. The smaller fountain at the southern end is the Fontana del Moror.

The third fountain, that of Neptune, was an empy basin for hundreds of years and then in 19th century statues by Giacomo della Porta were added the make the square more balanced. |
We will leave the Piazza and eat as restaurants near by... as with all great cities. You pay the price to eat at the piazza. |
